Buddha Shakyamuni
Every so often it is nice to simply have a lovely depiction of the Buddha. In this case, I went through the Wisdom Publications thangka calendars, which I save, and my mind stopped at this one. As with so many old thangkas, this one had lots of cracks and missing chips of paint. We had to touch it up a bit to make it work on the cover, but I think it still conveys a lot of the character of the original thangka. What I like particularly about this Buddha image is that it has such a lovely face, and the cover is so often about a face that looks out at the person browsing the racks. –Liza Matthews This thangka depicts Buddha Shakyamuni in meditation posture with his right hand in the “touching the earth” gesture and his left hand resting in his lap in the gesture of meditation. He is seen here as the expression of compassion, and flanked by favorite disciples Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Wisdom's beginnings were inspired in the 1970s by the late Tibetan Lama Thubten Yeshe. It is dedicated to making available authentic Buddhist works for the benefit of all. As a nonprofit charitable organization it reinvests all profits into the creation of new works. Its titles are distributed worldwide and have been translated into more than thirty foreign languages.
