Dorje Trollo
Sherab Palden Beru is an exquisite thangka painter, and this is a brilliant example of his work. It depicts Dorje Trollo, who was a pivotal figure in bringing Buddhism to Tibet. It was painted as a visual aid for practicing the Sadhana of Mahamudra, one of the first practice texts created by Chögyam Trungpa for his students. When we published excerpts from the Sadhana, I was delighted to be able to display this powerful image in the Shambhala Sun. –Liza Matthews Dorje Trollo is a wrathful manifestation of Padmasambhava, representing the Nyingma tradition, shown here wearing the black crown of a Karmapa, representing the Kagyu tradition. This represents the merging of intelligence and emotion, which together can transform the materialism in this dark age into compassion and liberation. Celebrated thangka artist Sherab Palden Beru was born in Kham, Tibet, in 1915. In 1956, after more than 30 years of monastic life, he spent three years in Lhasa until he escaped to India. He was then invited by the His Holiness the 16th Gyalwa Karmapa to move to Scotland, where Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche had established the first Tibetan Buddhist centre in the West. During his four decades at Samye Ling monastery, he has played a key role in preserving the art form in the Karma Gadri style through the training of Western students.  « Return Home |
