We found the work of Hassan Massoudy when his book was sent to our offices for review. He does his exquisite calligraphies with finely sharpened steel pens. This one is a particularly beautiful representation of Islamic art. It’s both calligraphic and artistically detailed. I particularly love the combination of very spontaneous loose strokes with extremely fine, detailed calligraphy across the bottom. –Liza Matthews Two of Massoudy’s beautiful works illustrate our discussion about the true spirit of Islam with Imam Feisal Abdul Sharif, titled “What’s Right with Islam,” and the accompanying interview with Irshad Manji, author of The Trouble with Islam. Hassan Massoudy was born in 1944 in Iraq. As a youngster growing up in Najef, in the south of Iraq, a town in which all images were prohibited, he fulfilled his passion for art by making drawings and calligraphies. His dreams of studying art in his native country were abandoned following Iraq’s political unrest and transition to dictatorship. After apprenticing with calligraphers in Baghdad, he emigrated to France in 1969 where he attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He has lived in France ever since.
