Crab Apples
Robert Spellman is one of my favorite painters, and he and his wife are among the best artists I know. He was the head of the art department at Naropa University for several years and he still teaches there. He’s a very fun and whimsical guy. This work comes from a series on “fruits and nuts.” These, of course, are the fruits. The nuts were not nuts in the sense of the things that come from trees but rather “nuts” as in nuts and bolts. I love the nut paintings, but these fruits are just so luscious. –Liza Matthews Robert Spellman has worked as visual artist, musician, and teacher. He was chair of the visual arts department at Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, for seven years. In 1996 he co-founded Mountain Water, an artists' retreat in rural southern Colorado that focuses on the exploration of the interface of artistic disciplines and meditation. Along with the investigation of mind and phenomena, he has been developing the ordinary skills of an artist as they have been understood in the West for the past five centuries. Mr. Spellman’s work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and has appeared in numerous publications.
