George Washington Meditating
I love Barry Blitt's work. I was so happy that he liked the idea of doing a painting of George Washington in meditation pose for the cover of our politics and religion issue. He was a delight to work with, and his George Washington is just perfect. We didn't give him that much instruction other than to say we didn't want him wearing a goatee, which was Barry's first suggestion. We wanted him to be in George Washington's outfit, not a dhoti or anything like that. People loved the instant visual pun, and it won best cover at the 2007 Atlantic Journalism Awards. –Liza Matthews This work was commissioned for the cover of our art-and-politics issue, published during the contentious mid-term elections in the U.S. in 2006. The idea was born in our editorial meeting when we were trying to figure out how to insinuate the practice of meditation into the political process. Barry Blitt is an award-winning illustrator whose work has appeared on the covers and pages of the New Yorker, Chicago Tribune, New York Times, and Entertainment Weekly. He lives in Riverside, Connecticut. Learn more about this wonderful artist at: www.barryblitt.com Click here for more information about our Frames.![]() « Return Home |
